England’s Alex Fitzpatrick holds a one-shot lead heading into the final round of the PGA Tour’s Truist Championship, as Rory McIlroy’s hopes of victory diminished in North Carolina.

Fitzpatrick carded eight birdies against a single bogey for a remarkable seven-under 64 at Quail Hollow Club, moving him to 14 under and one stroke ahead of Norway’s Kristoffer Reitan.
Cameron Young shot the round of the day with a 63 to climb into third place, just two shots off the lead. Nicolai Hojgaard sits four back, tied for fourth alongside halfway leader Sungjae Im.

JJ Spaun and Justin Thomas are both five under par and five strokes behind. Tommy Fleetwood, who started the third round in the final group with Im and one shot off the lead, carded a one-under 70, landing in a tie for sixth at nine under.
McIlroy, a four-time winner at Quail Hollow, began the day four shots off the lead but fell down the leaderboard and out of contention after a third-round 75. The back-to-back Masters champion birdied the par-four first but dropped shots on both par-threes on the front nine, then suffered four consecutive bogeys on the back nine. He birdied the par-five 15th after missing a 10-foot eagle putt and finished with three pars to close the day at one under par.
