Rakuten introduced a new “Home Run Zone” in the outfield fence of their home stadium, Rakuten Mobile Park, this season. Over the first 16 games at the venue, 27 home runs have been hit, which is 1.6 times the number recorded in the same period last year. The park now ranks third among Pacific League home grounds for the ease of hitting home runs.
While the new zone has boosted the team’s own power hitters, it has also come back to bite them on multiple occasions, as opponents have taken full advantage of the shortened fence. The dual impact of the modification has sparked both celebration and frustration among the Eagles’ faithful.
The team recently suffered a painful loss in which they gave up two home runs into the new zone, turning what could have been a tight game into a lopsided defeat. After the game, manager and players acknowledged the need to adjust pitching strategies accordingly.
Despite the mixed results, the club remains committed to the renovation, which was designed to increase offensive excitement and draw more fans to the park. Whether the change ultimately proves beneficial over the full season remains to be seen, but early numbers show a clear shift in home run frequency.
