Espanyol face a pivotal La Liga clash against Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday, with manager Manolo González demanding an all-out effort to snap an 18-match winless streak that has left the side just two points above the relegation zone. Speaking at a pre-match press conference, González stressed that every moment on the pitch must be treated as a battle for survival.
“We have to play with a do-or-die attitude and give everything. We need to win to get as close as possible to our goal. When you step on the pitch, you have to fight to the death,” said González.
The 46-year-old coach also addressed the arrival of sporting director Monchi, who recently joined the club. “I’ve spoken with him and he has given us confidence. The club believes we can turn this around. He’s just arrived and needs time to adapt. I’m not sure if it will have an immediate impact, but it will be important for the club. Ultimately, the players are the most important – we need to be at our best on the pitch to win.”
Regarding team selection, González confirmed the lineup is almost decided, with one minor doubt. “The players who come on in the second half are also very important. It’s a 90-minute match and everyone must be fully committed.”
On the support from fans at RCDE Stadium, he said: “The fans know the importance of this game and what to do. We will be united, just as they have always shown. The final judgment will come at the end of the season.”
