The Minnesota Vikings have added quarterback Kyler Murray to a roster that already includes 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy, setting the stage for a heated battle for the starting job. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the team expects a “true competition” between the two signal-callers.
“They envision it being a true competition: Kyler Murray versus J.J. McCarthy,” Pelissero said on The Rich Eisen Show. “Both these guys are going to go into this believing they’re going to win this job. I don’t know frankly how friendly that quarterback room is going to be. It’s going to be a very competitive quarterback room. From everything that I’ve understood, it is truly wide open. They’re keeping an open mind as a coaching staff.”
A “true competition” likely favors Murray, given his experience and accomplishments. He is more proven, having been named Offensive Rookie of the Year and earning Pro Bowl selections in 2020 and 2021 after being the first overall pick in 2019. For McCarthy to win the job, he will need to step up and outperform the veteran. Even if McCarthy secures the starting role, he must hold it by staying healthy—he missed his entire rookie season due to a preseason knee injury and sat out seven games in 2025.
The competition will benefit both players, as they will push each other to prepare. The key question is when the Vikings will decide a winner. At some point, the team needs its starter ready for the regular season, which means allocating first-team practice reps to the chosen quarterback sooner rather than later. Another critical factor is the opinion of the locker room; if one player clearly outperforms the other, teammates will recognize it and expect that player to lead the offense.
